LEARNING HOW TO PLAY SAROD / SARODE MUSICAL INSTRUMENT : Sarod is a stringed musical instrument with different Indian music gharanas (Indian classical
music schools) playing 3 distinctively different types of Sarod instruments unique to their respective Sarod classical music gharanas, the Gwalior gharana,
Maihar Gharana, Senia Shahjahanpur Gharana and Lucknow Gharana. The main differences include, number of total Sarod strings varying between 17 to 25, presence of Sarod resonator,
varying number of Sarod sympathetic strings - between 11 to 16, size of Sarod instrument (about 39 inches in lenght), 3 to 5 Chikari strings, traditionally
tuning Sarod to B or C and Sarod fingering techniques. The modern Sarod having 17 to 25 strings has 4 to 6 main melodic strings, with 2 to 4 other strings.
A few of these Sarod strings may be paired in double courses tuned in unison or at the octave, additionally, there are sympathetic strings and drone
strings in Sarod musical instrument.
SAROD / SARODE PLAYING TECHNIQUES: The seated Sarod player holds the Sarod instrument across his lap and after tuning of Sarod is done by the Sarod musician,
the strings of the Sarod are plucked with a plectrum held in the right hand, while the fingernails of the left hand press the strings. The Sarod strings
are plucked with a triangular Sarod plectrum (also called Java / Jaba) made of polished coconut shell, ebony, cocobolo wood, horn, Delrin, plain wire
or other such materials. The lack of frets in Sarod musical instrument and the tension of the Sarod strings make the Sarod a demanding instrument to play,
as the Sarod strings must be pressed hard against the fingerboard. For stopping the strings of the Sarod, two approaches are used, one approach involves
using the tip of Sarod player's fingernails to stop the strings and the second approach uses a combination of the nails and the fingertip to stop the
Sarod strings against the Sarod fingerboard. Sarod musical instrument has four to five metal strings which are tuned as Pa Sa Pa Sa Ma and Sa Pa Sa Ma,
respectively.
The Sarod musical instrument is known for a deep, weighty and introspective typical Sarod sound, with sympathetic strings giving it a resonant, reverberant quality.
Sarod being a fretless instrument, is able to produce the continuous slides between notes (also known as meend - glissandi - slide for Sarod) which is the important part
of North Indian Hindustani classical music and the classical musical instruments like Sarod.
